People can get a bad credit rating for a vast range of different reasons, but the most important issue is that you don’t panic and that you take action now to solve your problem early.

  • are you struggling to pay your debts on time and the listing came from a late payment or court judgement; or
  • you usually pay your bills on time and the listing from an accidental oversight?

If the listing was from a once off accidental oversight we recommend that you approach the creditor and ask that they remove the listing. If it was as a result of a once off late payment the creditor should remove the listing.

If you are struggling to pay your debts on time and you have multiple listings your situation may be more serious and we strongly recommend that you read on.

How do to assess my concern?

The first step is to ensure that the listing on your credit file is justified (ie did you pay the bill late or a creditor has obtained judgment against you for not paying a bill). We have prepared a step by step guide to help you with you decision if you are concerned about your credit file.

Steps to assess my bad credit rating

Obtain your Credit File

The first step is to obtain a copy of your credit file and determine if your creditors have filed any defaults.  If you have defaults listed on your file, you need to carefully consider if the default were justified.  If the default listing was not justified you should approach the creditor who recorded the default and ask that they remove the default listing. If the recording was not justified and the creditor refuses to remove the default listing we recommend that you contact the provider of the credit file and lodge a compliant (ie file a complaint with Veda Advantage or Dun and Bradstreet).

Review the listings

Once you have obtained your credit file, carefully review each listing recorded on your file.  If you don’t feel the listings are correct or justified, contact the party that recorded the listing immediately.

If the party that recorded the listing will not respond to you contact the party that maintains the database , ie Veda Advantage or Dun and Bradstreet and provide evidence of your contact with the listing party and evidence that you have paid the debt or reached agreement with the listing party.
